Glen the goat gives young cameleer the edge in Little Teamsters win

A goat destined to be “goat curry” helped one of the nation’s youngest cameleers win the prestigious Little Teamsters Award at the 2026 Barellan Good Old Days Festival.

2025 Tim Peel Cup winner and bullock driver Joey Reedy judged the Little Teamsters Award, choosing nine-year-old Charlie Woodhouse who drove a miniature sulky and Glen the goat, assisted by Jody Batchelor.

Glen, a British Alpine goat, owned by Jess Green had been originally rescued from the pound by a friend.

“He was destined for goat curry but here he is and he has won the trophy – it’s fantastic,” Jess said.

Charlie’s mother Kyrraley Woodhouse, of Boulia, Queensland, said her daughter had been driving for the last three years, starting on camels with her cameleer father Tom Woodhouse.

Charlie admitted she enjoyed driving both goats and camels, and was on hand to see her father help set a new Australian record for the largest number of camels harnessed to an Australian built wagon.

The Teamsters Trophy for the large draught animals was not awarded this year due to the Australian record attempt for the bullock teams, but all bullock drivers will have their names inscribed.

The trophies of scale model Bennett wagons were made by Allan Langfield, Wagga Wagga, and are competed for annually by a different species of large and small draught animal each year.

The animals, harness, vehicles/implements are to be historically correct and judged as a traditional authentic Australia style working team, portraying the business or work the teamster is engaged in. The animals, harness and vehicles are to be in a safe and sound working condition (not a show turnout).

The ability of the teamster to control the team and the response of the animals to commands will be part of the general assessment.

In 2027 the camel teams will compete for the Teamsters Trophy and donkeys for the Little Teamsters Trophy.
